Weight Gain and Depression
Many people that are overweight or obese may suffer from any number of underlying problems, one of these may be depression, this may be caused when we are feeling low, sad or gloomy. It is reckoned that between 5 and 15% of the population will suffer at some point in their life from some type of depression. When we feel low or sad we usually look for a comfort substance, in many cases this is food.

Many overweight or obese people eat when they are sad then they get depressed again because they have ate too much so the circle continues. When you are feeling depressed and wanting to ‘break the circle’ and lose weight there are many organisations and professionals that will help you. What if you want to try it yourself ?
Recent studies show that one of the best ways to combat depression is regular exercise, don’t try and be a superstar (this will never happen) set yourself realistic goals 10 – 15 minute walk again this will make you feel good and you will want to carry on. Eating the proper foods has shown to help, for example Serotonin is a chemical that is produced in the brain that keeps us happy these chemicals are increased when we eat carbohydrates.
There are diets that we eat with no or low carbohydrates so if you suffer from depression you should not attempt these diets. When setting goals for your diet don’t set them too high, remember there will be days when you binge eat, don’t let this make you quit just relax and start the next day. Losing weight and beating depression is a long journey with many pauses along the way.
